20 affordable travel destinations for autumn 2025
Summer may be over soon, but there’s still plenty of time for you to enjoy an affordable adventure. In fact, autumn is the very best time to visit Europe, especially Southern Europe, after the sweltering heat and the madness of summer crowds, the season brings cooler air, calmer streets and better prices. This guide lists 20 affordable travel destinations across Europe and beyond that shine between September and November.
Autumn is my favourite season. I love its crispness, milder temperatures and breathtaking warm colours. But I also love travelling in autumn because flights are significantly cheaper and I can indulge in one last getaway before the start of the cold weather. Travelling during the shoulder season has many advantages, popular destinations are less crowded and accommodations are abundant and more affordable.
With a little planning and flexibility, you can explore some of the most beautiful cities across Europe, North Africa and the Americas for less. In this guide, I reveal how you can take advantage of shoulder season without breaking the bank and suggest twenty budget‑friendly cities perfect for an autumn getaway.
Why Autumn is the best Season for Affordable Travel
As the summer crowds disperse but the weather is still warm enough to enjoy the outdoors, airlines and hotels often drop their prices to attract travellers. The cooler weather also means that you can explore many cities comfortably, without the oppressive heat of summer. With fewer tourists around, you’ll find that lines at major attractions are much shorter, and the overall pace of travel is more relaxed.
Autumn is also festival season in many destinations—think wine harvests, food fairs and cultural events—so you can pair great value with rich experiences.
Practical Travel Tips for Autumn Escapes
- Pack layers and a light waterproof: weather can swing from sunny to showery.
- Book accommodation with free cancellation for flexibility around autumn sales.
- If flying a low‑cost carrier, travel hand‑luggage only to avoid fees.
- Consider off‑peak check‑in days (Sun–Tue) and midweek stays for lower hotel rates.
- Use public transport passes and city cards for bundled savings on sights.
How to Find Flights Under £50
Finding sub‑£50 fares from the UK and other European countries is still possible on short‑haul routes with early booking and flexible dates. I start with Google Flights and Skyscanner to scan entire months, then set fare alerts. For US readers, watch for fall fare drops on domestic routes and shoulder‑season sales to Mexico and the Caribbean.
